Hampton Celebrates Computer Science Education Week
Computer Science Education Week is an annual program dedicated to inspiring students in grades K-12 to develop an interest in computer science . Computer Science Education Week 2016 was held Dec . 5 through 11 , 2016 in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper ( Dec . 9 ).
Computer in the Core coalition originally conceived the concept . Today , 350 partners and 100,000 educators worldwide support the annual campaign .
To celebrate the week , the Hampton Township School District engaged its students in various computer science activities .
All three elementary schools participated in the Hour of Code , a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in over 180 countries . The event included a one-hour tutorial designed in over 45 languages .
Students participated in a coding activity from 2:15 to 3:15 p . m . Monday through Thursday ; 1 to 1:50 p . m . Monday ; and 1 to 2 p . m . Friday in all three buildings . Students at Central , Poff and Wyland worked with Beebots and Puzzlets each day during their regularlyscheduled library / media times .
Hampton Middle School students in the 8th grade computer rotation class completed the FBI ’ s Safe Online Surfing ( SOS ) Challenge and placed first in the Starfish category for November 2016 . It is the first time the students have placed first in the challenge . The class meets from 2 to 2:45 p . m . Monday , Tuesday and Thursday .
High School students in Joe Cangilla ’ s math classes developed lessons on the computer for Middle School students in Jennifer Miller ’ s Geometry classes . Cangilla ’ s students currently are working on developing the lessons , which were presented to Miller ’ s class from 8:50 to 9:34 a . m . on Dec . 19 through 21 .
Future of Learning Now : STEAM Learning & Innovation Exposition
Explore the Future of Learning Now , at the Hampton Hub . This Interactive STEAM Learning and Innovation Exposition will engage students , parents , and the general public in digital learning and innovation within the Hampton learning community . Through hands-on student and teacher-led sessions , activities and displays , attendees will have the opportunity to experience STEAM learning and innovations in education through an assortment of District and grant-funded experiences implemented across the district . Don ’ t miss this opportunity for hands-on Design Thinking , BeeBots , Hummingbird robotics , Makey Makey , VEX robotics , Puzzlets , Osmos -- and more -- with District partners and community organizations . Be sure to save some time to challenge your skills on a “ Mission to Maya ,” in our student and facultydesigned and built Escape Room at Hampton Middle School in partnership with Code Breakers , Pittsburgh ’ s most immersive escape room , and CMU ’ s Entertainment Technology Center . Finally , be sure to experience the “ Steel City Time Machine ,” reminiscent of the DeLorean in “ Back to the Future .”
