Special Olympics Pennsylvania hosted its 40th annual Winter Games earlier this year, and Greensburg Salem high school students were there to assist and cheer on the speed skating athletes at their competition at Kirk S. Nevin Arena. GS volunteers took on roles as timers, judges, and athlete escorts at the two-day event. Senior Teegan Hahn’s role was to time the skaters during the races. “I thought this sounded like an awesome event,” he said. “I wanted to give back to the community and help out.” Some of the students acted as official judges for the race, deciding what place to give each athlete. Senior Courtney Mattucci stated, “I wanted to be a part of the athletes’ journey to the Olympics. It was great getting to hear their stories of how they started competing in speed skating.” Rachel Amundson spent her time volunteering as a heat box director. Her job was to call the events and the skaters who would race in them. She had to keep the skaters organized by heats and keep the event flowing by having the next group of skaters prepared. The senior reported, “I wanted to give a helping hand and get out into the community to represent Greensburg Salem.” For some volunteers, helping with Special Olympics was a new venture. This was the case for Kellie Lynch, a GS senior. “I am really happy I volunteered because it was so much fun!” Supporting Special Olympics athletes was a rewarding experience for these GSHS volunteers! Nicely Elementary to Hold My School Color Run The students of Nicely Elementary School will host the inaugural community-wide My School Color Run on Sunday, June 4th, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. on the 5 Star Trail to raise money for the school.
