Nick Slider
For 2016 graduate Nick Slider , the mandatory “ Senior Project ” was more than a requirement needed to receive his diploma- it was a stepping stone on the pathway to his future career .
Always interested in the Culinary Arts , Nick chose several of Nora Andrus ’ Family and Consumer Science Foods classes as his electives and confirmed his love of all things culinary . “ Without Mrs . Andrus , I would have no idea how to cook ! She taught me the basics of cooking , and I learned a lot from her ,” said Nick . He took Accounting classes so he would have the knowledge he needed to one day own his own restaurant .
Nick was a hard-working and determined young man who stayed after school every day for Next Step , an afterschool program developed by Lucy Iapalucci and Wendy Jorgensen that provides students with an opportunity to put forth their optimum effort and maximize learning . He made arrangements with his marching band director to stay after school for the program to work on his classroom assignments , then return to the band room , consistently for all four years of high school .
When the time came to choose his Senior Project , Nick knew exactly what he had in mind and became an intern
GS Faculty Thanks “ The Giving Tree ” Donors
The faculty of Greensburg Salem High School would like to thank the employees at JCPenney , Greensburg Water Authority , TLC Foundation , many anonymous donors , advisory classrooms , and the entire GS Community for their contributions to The Giving Tree this holiday season . Due to their acts of kindness , over 40 students and families were able to have a Christmas to remember . When the GSHS counselors approached JCPenney for donations to The Giving Tree , they not only donated , but also came through with the pallets of clothes , shoes , kitchenware , and even a monetary collection from the employees . For this reason , many of our students and their families had presents under the tree and food on the table Christmas morning .
To add to the giving season , the employees at the Greensburg Water Authority made a sizable donation that also helped supply gifts and meals to families within the district Their kind and compassionate response to support our GS families is very much appreciated .
Additionally , the GSHS student body rallied together to support The Giving Tree through their kindness , generosity and personal contributions . Guidance staff Laura Klipa , Deb Rietski , and Deb Yasika , along with many others across the district , worked extremely hard to ensure the needs of our students were met during the giving season to provide a holiday to remember .

Ms . Iapalucci and Mrs . The two teachers assisted Nick in matriculating to Westmoreland County Community College , where he is taking classes to earn his diploma in Culinary Arts . He has gained experience preparing everything from soufflés to breads , but he declares his favorite dish to cook to be mushroom marinara sauce with pasta . “ In five years , I see myself working in a restaurant , doing what I love and seeing the world ,” Nick declared .
“ We helped Nick by encouraging him to pursue his dream ,” said Mrs . Iapalucci . “ He took advantage of every opportunity Greensburg Salem had to offer . We are so proud of him and confident that his future will continue to be bright !”
