“ Students ’ learning is enhanced both during and after the school day because of the efforts of staff and community partners ...” reensburg Salem GREENSBURG SALEM SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

As we move into the second semester of the school year , Greensburg Salem is excited to share a few of our exciting accomplishments with our community members . Golden Lion Country is certainly glistening despite the cold and snowy weather that has descended upon us this year in Western Pennsylvania . The year is now in full swing , and we hope this month ’ s magazine will warm your hearts and spirits as you read about our wonderful staff and students .

Each year , our elementary students benefit from our teachers and university partners as they create special programs for our youngest learners . Our magazine this month , features a story about the rich partnerships with Pitt at Greensburg and Seton Hill to bring education students into classrooms at Hutchinson Elementary to assist students with their learning tasks . You can also learn about a new reading club at Nicely Elementary and a third grade project with Toys for Tots at Metzgar Elementary . Students ’ learning is enhanced both during and after the school day because of the efforts of staff and community partners , and this month shares just a few of the many exciting things our little ones get to be a part of .
Because of our community partnerships , we are fortunate to have the resources to try new initiatives . We ’ ve included a story in the magazine this month about a grant that the Middle School received to help students adopt personalized ways to take charge of their health . A healthy student becomes a healthy learner , and we are excited that our middle school physical education staff is looking beyond sports to help students adopt fitness strategies for life . The grant incorporates technology into fitness to provide motivation and high interest for young people . We thank Highmark for making the funds available for this great program and look forward to seeing the results with students .
While we have many group accolades in Golden Lion Country , this month ’ s magazine also describes several
individuals who have brought glimmer and shine to our manes . Our Coordinator of Student Services , Todd McMillen was awarded for his work in creating inclusive environments . He is one of our many employees who goes above and beyond for all children and we are proud that he is one of ours . We also feature new coach Rick Klimchock , who is building teamwork with community service activities for his girls ’ basketball team . Our staff at Greensburg Salem continues to think outside of the box to work toward developing the whole child .
As always , we have many in the community to thank for thinking of our students and going the extra mile . From a bus driver who took needy kids to Overly ’ s to the Greensburg Salem Education Foundation raising money for teacher grants to businesses who contribute to our holiday Giving Tree , we applaud their generosity and appreciate their willingness to give to our students . Our students really need support , and we are very lucky to have those who offer it .
This month ’ s magazine also features our two spring musicals which provide so many opportunities for students to share their talents , whether it be singing , acting , dancing , set design or working on the production crew . This year , we are very excited to present two family favorites- “ Mary Poppins ” and “ Tarzan ,” and we hope to see both young and old attend for a delightful entertainment treat . Adding flying this year to our repertoire , our musicals should be crowd pleasers !
Perhaps , most exciting of all , we are happy to share the piece about Greensburg Salem being awarded the WPIAL Sportsmanship Award this year . Our sports program promotes teamwork , respect , courage , leadership and perseverance . We are very proud of our students , athletes , fans , coaches and our Athletic Director Lynn Jobe . Golden Lion Country has been a great place to be ! We look forward to what the second half of the year brings !
