Accolade for Invercargill NRG at community awards

The Next Rotary Generation ( NRG ) Club of Invercargill hasn ’ t even been chartered a year and already it ’ s won the runner-up award in the youth and children section of Southland ’ s Trustpower Community Awards .
NRG member Rochelle Surendran says the team was recognised for a range of projects , including a quiz night which raised funds to supply Christmas hampers to needy families last year , a collaboration with other Invercargill Rotary clubs and Love Local that provided 100 fruit and vegetable parcels to families affected by a temporary closure of Prime Range Meats in February , together with numerous other fundraisers that have given much-needed support to community organisations .
“ It was amazing to be recognised , when we ’ re a brand new club , for the raft of projects we ’ ve been working on .”
Rochelle paid tribute to section winners , the pupils from Limehills School , who , she says , are as passionate as they are inspirational .
“ They ’ re taking the initiative to meet a range of needs in their community , and what they are achieving is staggering .”
The Supreme Award was won by Koha Kai , which will go on to the national Trustpower Community Awards early next year .
“ It was a fun night and great to hear about communityled projects all over Southland ,” Rochelle says .
“ It caused me to reflect and consider how we , as parents , can cultivate a culture of volunteerism and service in our own family , and in the school community our children are part of .
“ It ’ s given me a bunch of ideas for how we can empower our young children to achieve more than we ever believed possible – thanks Limehills for the inspiration !”
Warmest congratulations from all of us in Rotary District 9980 to our recent Paul Harris Fellow recipients :
