Top team effort

It was collaboration central at early October ’ s Dunedin Brick Show with the city ’ s Next Rotary Generation ( NRG ) team co-ordinating a fine effort among seven local clubs to raise more than $ 11,500 for children .
NRG president Susanah Walker says the club became involved after an approach at the Southland Brick Show by LUG ( Lego ® User Group ) South , and ended up major sponsors and supporters , with backing from other Rotarians .
“ We were so grateful to have help from Dunedin Central , Dunedin South , Dunedin East , the Rotoract Club of Dunedin , Dunedin North and Dunedin , who all sent volunteers along to help .”
LUGSouth donated $ 10,470 from door sales to NRG to go toward “ kiddy distraction packs ” for Dunedin Hospital ’ s Emergency Department . Exhibitors also gifted Lego ® for the Project Starfish team , which included Dunedin Rotoractors and NRG members , to take to the Rescue Mission for Children in Thailand . ( See story , page 12 )
NRG ’ s commitment spanned several months , and included :
• Organising sponsorship and media coverage
• Managing the show ’ s Facebook page , including running competitions and sponsoring advertising
• Distributing signs
• Paying a face painter to attend both days , and organising former 9980 district governor Jonathan Usher to perform magic shows
• Co-ordinating the Rotary and Otago Girls ’ High School volunteers to help set up and look after different areas of the show
• Selling lollies – raising another $ 1200 for ‘ kiddy distraction packs ’
Rotary ’ s Dunedin clubs banded together at the end of October to add a splash of colour to the city ’ s streets – and raise money for one of our organisation ’ s signature causes : the eradication of polio .
The ‘ Purple for Polio Street Appeal ’ raised over $ 2750 , which will be channelled toward continuing what we hope is the last phase of our battle to finally call the world ‘ polio free ’.
