With an extensive background in public relations , journalism and management , it ’ s little surprise many of Claire Ramsay ’ s Rotary roles have drawn on her expertise in building strong relationships , leadership and communication .
In her latest position - as assistant governor supporting the Rotary clubs of Dunedin South , North and Central ; Rotaract and NRG - her focus is on mentoring and supporting the presidents , while providing a communication conduit between clubs and District 9980 ’ s leadership team .
Claire is also actively supporting her clubs to identify opportunities to join forces and bring greater collective strength to key projects , including , to date , polio eradication fundraisers and Dunedin ’ s first Lego ® -based extravaganza , the recent Brick Show .
After joining the Rotary Club of Dunedin South in 1998 , Claire has gone on to hold several integral positions at club and district level . As well as previously sitting on both District 9980 ’ s and Dunedin South ’ s Public Image committees , she also served as club president in 2010-11 . She ’ s been responsible for the club ’ s bulletin for several years ; the Facebook page , and is now the honorary historian .
One of the highlights of her assistant governorship is the chance to work with other , younger members of the Rotary family through Rotaract and Next Rotary Generation ( NRG ). She ’ s also enjoying gaining greater insight into the diverse ways in which different clubs work .
Her interest in , and strong support of , young people is reflected in Claire ’ s ongoing commitment to Rotary ’ s youth and education programmes . Today , she sits on the district ’ s Foundation Committee , with a responsibility for 9980 ’ s scholarship programme . Previously , she was responsible for the Ambassadorial Scholarship programme in the district for three years until it was disbanded .
Outside of Rotary , she chairs the Otago Youth Wellness Trust , which provides a wraparound service to vulnerable young people in the Dunedin community .
Among all of her Rotary experiences during her two decades with our organisation , it ’ s her work with young people and humanitarians that has proved the most fulfilling .
For her , the greatest privilege so far has been serving as counsellor for Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars , a role in which she has welcomed three international students to District 9980 , Dunedin , and the University of Otago .
This year , the first global scholar , Sakhr Munassar , of Yemen , is hosted by Claire ’ s Rotary Club of Dunedin South , and , with the support of the Rotary Foundation , is completing his Master ’ s Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies .
Claire ’ s passion for helping young people through Rotary is driven by her philosophy that not only our organisation , but the world itself , will be all the better and stronger when these young scholars step into leadership roles .
