Pediatric Dentistry Catering to a
of Pittsburgh Growing Clientele
D
r. Ryan Shaw’s patients are unique;
each one is still growing and faced
with the pitfalls that all kids are
up against—developing excellent dental
hygiene habits and saying no to sugary
sweets.
Fortunately, Dr. Shaw’s practice is
specifically for children and adolescents
and has been a staple of the Fox Chapel and Natrona Heights
communities since 1979.
“We’re an established practice. Dr. (David) Selvig founded it
and I came on board in 2016, when he made it known that he
was looking to retire,” Dr. Shaw said. “We emphasize preventive
dentistry, high-quality restorative treatment, orthodontic treat-
ment and pretty much everything in between.”
Treating kids from infancy through late adolescence, Pediatric
Dentistry of Pittsburgh’s goal is to offer the most comprehensive
dental care to its patients as possible. There are sedation services
for patients who have a phobia, dental anxiety, or an inability to
tolerate treatment due to young age, as well as hygiene services
in a caring and relaxed environment where kids can feel comfort-
able.
“Everything is child-oriented here,” Dr. Shaw notes. “Everyone
on staff works well with kids and we focus on their needs specif-
ically, as the dental needs of children and adolescents are differ-
ent than those of adults. For the same reasons you would take
your child to a pediatrician rather than a general practice physi-
cian, you should consider taking your child to a pediatric dental
specialist. We try very hard to keep everything relaxed here while
providing care that’s second to none.”
Dr. Shaw’s experience in dentistry spans more than a decade.
He’s a graduate of Duquesne University and went on to the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania (Penn) School of Dental Medicine in Phil-
adelphia. After he completed dental school, he performed his
specialty training at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh followed by
six years in private practice before taking the helm of Pediatric
Dentistry of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Shaw understands the needs of his patients, the concerns
of their parents and how to best serve both. He’s board certified
by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is a member
of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. As a pediatric
dentist he has also been formally trained in child psychology,
behavior guidance, preventive techniques, restorative dentistry,
orthodontics, sedation dentistry, and the treatment of children
with special needs. Because of these differences, pediatric den-
tistry requires an additional two years of postdoctoral training
than general dentistry. Dr. Shaw is also a strong believer in con-
tinuing education and has hundreds of hours of credits under his
belt, which help him to stay current in the field.
“One of the things parents always ask about is X-rays and
radiation,” Dr. Shaw adds. “We are completely digital here. Our
machines have the lowest radiation dose possible, and we take
the least number of X-rays as possible. We understand those con-
cerns and minimize them for parents as well as for the health of
our patients.”
