AAUW PRESENTS UPCOMING PROGRAM
On Tuesday , Nov . 14 , at 10 a . m ., the Fox Chapel Area Affiliate of the American Association of University Women ( AAUW ) will present “ The Humanities Go Digital : The Six Degrees of Francis Bacon Project ” at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church .
How would Francis Bacon have connected to other philosophers in 1600 if the internet had been invented ? Who might William Shakespeare have “ friended ” on Facebook ? And what scientific revelations would Isaac Newton have shared with colleagues via tweets ? Unknowable . . . until now .
The Six Degrees of Francis Bacon Project teams the Carnegie Mellon and Georgetown University humanities departments to explore the “ what if ” of social media connections four centuries ago . This fascinating exercise recreates the early modern social network of prominent historical figures , uncovering personal relationships that allow us to see who would ’ ve known whom , and when — and even how — in early modern Britain .
Associate Professor of English Christopher Warren directs the EBA ( Bachelor of Arts in English ) Program at CMU . His research interests include digital humanities , law and literature , and the history of political thought . His first book , “ Literature and the Law of Nations ,” was published in 2015 by the Oxford University Press .
The public is welcome to attend this free AAUW-sponsored presentation .
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy , philanthropy , education , and research .
