Where Quality is a Pressing Matter

here aren’t too many places where you
can get quality mom and pop service
anymore, especially in Cranberry. But
Metro Dry Cleaning is one of those places
where the technology may be cutting edge,
but the customer service and attention to
detail is from days gone by.
“You always hear the phrase, ‘Take them
to the cleaners,’ and it’s a bad thing,” said Tim
Blain, owner of Metro Dry Cleaning. “That’s
offensive to us because we do quality work.
We take the time and invest in the product
and employees to keep your clothes looking
as new as possible for as long as we can.”
Blain, who has been pressing pants
since he was 14 years old, bought Metro
Dry Cleaners in 2004. The store itself had
been around since 1986 under different
ownership, and since Blain took over, he’s
invested in top of the line machines and
green solvents that make dry cleaning more
of a science than a service.
“There are a lot of cleaners in the industry
who never reinvest in their equipment. But
if you’re going to thrive in this business, if
you’re going to offer quality work, you have
to change with the times and keep up with
the best practices in the industry,” Blain said.
“We’re a green dry cleaner and we’re big
into wet cleaning, which uses water and
detergents instead of solvents to do the
same job.”
Metro not only dry cleans clothing, they
offer a shirt laundry service, household
item cleaning, shoe repair, seamstress
work and alterations, drapery cleaning and
leather repair. All services include free home
delivery.
Blain said that because the quality of
the service is so important to him, he is
constantly sending his 12 employees to
continuing education classes and seminars
pertinent to the dry cleaning industry.
“People might think that because dry
cleaning’s been around since the mid-1800s,
that it’s been perfected,” Blain said. “But the
truth is, fabrics are constantly changing.
Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s it was all wool.
Then we had the polyester era in the ‘80s.

out. You constantly have to keep up with
material changes. Chemicals are constantly
changing. You basically have to learn new
ways of spotting to get wine out each time
you change solvents. The manufacturers are
always trying to make their machines and
chemicals better. There’s always newer and
better product and safer methods to learn.”
