Students were able to request recipes of foods they enjoyed so they could re-create the meal at home with their families. Participants also received a chef ’s hat and certificate upon completion of the program. In addition to trying new foods, students learned how to set a table and serve each other. They were prohibited from using electronic devices during the meal and were instructed not to speak with food in their mouths. “Manners and table etiquette have been a major part of the program, because it teaches students to share,” Zrimsek explains. Kids Around the Table also provided participants an opportunity to socialize with fellow students, including some they may not have known well before enrolling in the program. “Students really seem to enjoy the conversation they have with their peers during lunch,” notes Droney. Parents have told school leaders that participating in Kids Around the Table has had an impact at home because children are more polite at dinner and are willing to try new foods. “The Kids Around the Table program has been a unique, adventurous experience for our school and students,” Myers says. n Chartiers Valley | Summer 2017 | icmags.com 21
