ZION LUTHERAN HOSTS
CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
Students of Zion Lutheran Church’s Early
Childhood Center hosted a Christmas singing
celebration on Dec. 4. The evening included
several holiday favorites sung by the children
of the center, as well as a solo by Tevia
Grimenstein. Pastor Edward Grimenstein
provided the closing prayer for the night.
Doug Krantz was the pianist for the evening.
The children learned the songs and rehearsed
with staff as part of their daily activities at the
center, overseen by Center Director Tracey
Harris. Following the event, the church invited
everyone to a reception.

“This is a terrific opportunity for students
to learn about the things that impact our
environment and our health, and to share their
thoughts and ideas with us,” said Dr. Karen
Hacker, ACHD Director. “We encourage
students in grades 6 through 8 to participate,
and we look forward to seeing their innovative
and creative ideas.”
The top three winners will be announced
on Friday, April 20, in conjunction with Earth
Day celebrations. The winning posters will also
be featured on the health department’s web
site: achd.net.

The deadline for entries is Friday, March 9.
The top three winning students will receive a
$75 gift card to Barnes & Noble. The teachers
of the winning students will also receive a $50
gift card to Staples.

ENVIRONMENTAL POSTER
CONTEST
The Allegheny County Health Department
(ACHD) is continuing its tradition of holding
an environmental poster contest for middle
school students, grades 6 through 8. This will
be the health department’s 19th year holding
the contest.
This year’s theme is “Healthy Environment,
Healthy Bodies.” Students are encouraged
to think about both large- and small-scale
solutions to protecting our environment and
health. Posters should highlight their ideas

Robert C. Cicco, MD, has been nominated
to serve as the 2018 president of the Allegheny
County Medical Society (ACMS). He is the
153rd president of the local organization that
represents physicians from all specialties and
provides leadership and advocacy for patients
and physicians. The physician organization has
been serving Allegheny County since 1865.
Dr. Cicco is board certified in pediatrics and
neonatal-perinatal
medicine. He is
now retired, but
most recently
served as associate
director of the
Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit at West
Penn Hospital
and was a clinical
assistant professor,
pediatrics, at
Temple University School of Medicine.
A member of ACMS since 1980, Dr. Cicco
has served on the Board of Directors and
Executive Committee since 2014. He was the
ACMS treasurer in 2014, secretary in 2015,
vice president in 2016, and president-elect in
2017. At the state level, Dr. Cicco served as a
delegate to the Pennsylvania Medical Society
in 2013. He was a member of the PAMED
Task Force on State of Medicine from 2010 to
2013. In addition, he has been the recipient
of several prestigious awards, including the
ACMS Physician Volunteer Award and the
PAMED Physician Volunteer Award. In 2012,
the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American
Academy of Pediatrics named Dr. Cicco
Pediatrician of the Year.
Dr. Cicco is a past president of Parent
Care, a national association of parents and
professionals that advocates for family-
centered NICU care. He is also a past
president of the Pennsylvania Chapter of
the American Academy of Pediatrics and for
four years chaired the planning group for the
AAP National Conference and Exhibition.
In addition, Dr. Cicco is a member of the
Committee to Establish Recommended
Standards for Newborn ICU Design and
is active in many projects directed toward
reducing infant mortality.
He has served on numerous health
department advisory committees over the
years and currently serves on the Advisory
Committee for the Pennsylvania Metabolic
Screening Program and the Allegheny County
Health Department’s Child Death Review
team.
Dr. Cicco graduated from Case Western
Reserve University School of Medicine in
1976. He completed his residency at Children’s
Hospital in Pittsburgh and a fellowship at
Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.
Dr. Cicco and his wife, Anita, reside in Scott
Township. They have four adult sons.
BUILDER WINS AWARDS
Two of Paragon Homes’ recent projects
received Home of the Year honors at the
recent Housing Excellence Awards held by the
members of the Builders Association of Metro
Pittsburgh. This year’s competition marks the
26th time that Paragon Homes has won such
an honor, and is particularly special because
this year had more entries than any of the
previous years. ■
