The Spencer Family YMCA was also built using environmentally friendly methods and materials . The YMCA created its own “ green ” building standards that included renewable energy , higher water efficiency and improved water quality requirements . “ We build all our facilities with the environment in mind ,” Soliday notes .
Amy George , Sustainability and Facility Manager for the YMCA , says the new building includes low-flow water fixtures that use 20 percent less water than standard equipment . The YMCA also has an energy contract that requires 10 percent of the power come from a renewable source — in this case , wind energy .
Furthermore , the indoor swimming pools will use a moss filtration system in addition to the traditional chlorine system . Moss filtration systems look like giant tea bags and , according to George , will require less chlorine to maintain healthy water standards . ■
