MEMORIAL STUDENT WINS THIRD GRADE SPELLING BEE

Congratulations to Memorial Elementary School Third Grader Neha Adhikari , who won the Sixth Annual Bethel Park School District Third Grade Spelling Bee , sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bethel Park .

As the winner of this year ’ s Spelling Bee , she received a $ 250 Amazon Gift Card , courtesy of the Rotary Club , and was eligible to compete in the Rotary ’ s District Spelling Bee , which was held at Seven Springs .
Finishing in Second Place and receiving a $ 150 Amazon Gift Card was Lincoln Third Grader Lillian Graff . Washington Third Grader Michael Hladio finished in Third Place and received a $ 50 Amazon Gift Card .
This year , 32 spellers entered the event . It took 12 rounds to get down to the final 10 spellers . Neha won the Bee by correctly spelling “ concentration .” Lillian captured Second Place with “ coyote ,” and Michael correctly spelled “ auditorium ” to finish in Third Place .
The Spelling Bee is a natural extension of a long-standing partnership the School District has with the local Rotary Club . Each year , the Rotary Club of Bethel Park generously donates a copy of A Student ’ s Dictionary to every Bethel Park Third Grade student , which is theirs to keep . The Dictionaries come in handy as the students prepare for the Bee .
Thank you , Rotary Club of Bethel Park for this valuable partnership !

STATE FAIR TEACHES FUN FACTS ABOUT THE UNITED STATES

Memorial Elementary School Fourth Graders did a fantastic job sharing information about the fifty , nifty United States at this year ’ s Fourth Grade State Fair . Students in Mrs . Abbey ’ s , Mr . Foster ’ s , Mrs . Hruby ’ s and Mrs . Reese ’ s rooms worked individually or in pairs to thoroughly research one of the United States . They created tri-fold presentation boards as backdrops for their oral presentations , where they dressed up as either a famous person , a resident or something synonymous with their state to deliver an informative pitch about their state and why you should visit it .

Hearing the presentations were members of the students ’ families and the Memorial Third Grade classes , who rotated through all of the fourth grade classrooms to learn more about the exciting things to do and see in all 50 states .
Every year the students uncover some interesting “ fun facts ” about their states , including :
• Milwaukee , WI is the Frozen Custard Capital of the World ;
• In Georgia , there is a law that states it ’ s illegal to eat fried chicken with a fork ;
• Nevada is the driest state in the United States ;
• People in Arkansas enjoy gravy infused with cocoa powder . It was a great morning of learning about our great country .
