Improving Hong Kong Street Waste Disposal Experience May 2019 | Page 63

Details - Cart Introduction - Cart The cart is a key tool for the collectors. They use it to gather all garbages from the bins and send them to the waste collection station. However, current cart design is not user friendly. It is very big and bulky. In fact, from our interviews, we realized some collectors even purchase their own carts in hardware shops or buy different accessories to modify the cart (for example adding strings to hang their belongings) to suit their needs. Idea It is nearly impossible to design one single cart to fit all conditions given how different the streets of Hong Kong area, not to mention all the different needs of the collectors. So we want to propose a modular cart that collectors can adjust based on their needs and context. Here are they key design criteria: 1. Minimal Effort - Most collectors are in their 50s to 70s. We want to make it as effortless as possible for them to move the garbage from bins to the cart to prevent any injury. 2. Easy Navigation - Streets of Hong Kong are in general quite narrow with lots of pedestrians and in some cases, quite steep. We have seen garbage falling out of the carts, cart crashing into people and other incidents during our observation. The new design has to enable collectors to navigate in different conditions easily. 3. Storage - Currently almost all collectors will hook some strings at the metallic handle of their cart to hang different bags for their personal belongings (water, lunch box, wallet, tools etc). This is not hygenic and user friendly (bags moving back and forth when pushing the cart forward). In our new design, we want to make sure there is safe storage space for collectors. 82 Design Change x Design Trust Design Change x Design Tr u st 83
