You can’t expect people to actively look for information and bins” “Strict policy enforcement helps learning - There was once I threw recycable garbage into the wrong bin and no one collected it, the stinky garbage then stayed there for another week, I‘d never throw it carelessly again” AGE: 60-65 LOCAL RETIRED LIVES IN OLMPIA CITY HANG OUT IN YAU TSIM WONG & SAI WAN HO KNOWLEDGE • Has habit of recycling • Learnt and became aware of the issue when he lived/ travelled in foreign countries e.g. Korea, Japan, UK • Whole family would remind and influence each other, especially his wife • Prefers icon more than color coding, colors are not universal enough for him to distinguish which bin for which • He is aware of government policy on new rubbish bin, mainly gets information from TV and news ACTION Garbage disposal • He rarely uses the regular street garbage bins Recycling • Keeps newspaper, paper, bottle, clothing at home for recycling • Mainly use recycling bins at housing estate • For newspaper, he gives it to an old newspaper collector every 3-4 days to help him earn a living • Rarely uses recycling bins on the street, he will instead store his garbage in his bag and dispose at the recycling bins at his housing estate THINKING & FEELING • Inspired from real life examples from Japan, Korea and United Kingdom during his travels • His wife, she will remind him to wash the bottles before bringing to recycling bins • He thinks the number of dog faeces bins are not sufficient in HK. In the walkway where he walks his dog, there is only 1 dog faeces bin and it’s always full • The design and size of the dog faeces bins are not user friendly
