the environment and the curriculum . Listening to Dr . Lamb speak about the high expectations and potential for great influence that she foresees for our generation of future occupational therapy practitioners was a true inspiration to make a difference in healthcare . Experiencing this potential for influence first hand in just my first year of graduate school was incredible and truly brought Dr . Lamb ’ s message full circle for me as a student and future therapist .

Student Voice

Running the Show : Parkland College OTA Students Try Their Hand at Planning for ILOTA ’ s First 5k Race

Last spring , students in the Parkland College Occupational Therapy Assistant program were issued a challenge to extend their creativity , organization , and problem-solving skills outside of the classroom and into the community . The challenge , issued by Professor Emeritus Rebecca Behnke , was to put together a plan to host the first ever ILOTA 5k , an open invite for all occupational therapy practitioners in the state of Illinois to gather together to shine a light on our profession while running a 3.1-mile course through Parkland ’ s campus in Champaign .
Vision
In the Spring of 2018 , the students of the Parkland College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program will partner with ILOTA to host the first annual 5K run and walk . The students envision the 5k race as an inclusive event that will include Occupational Therapy practitioners across the state of Illinois , and those that
Deanna Cannon , Raquelle Schoolcraft , Deborah Corey , Wing Zhao , Kailey Herter , Brittany Leman-Muhammad , Kimberly Prince & Anne Grabow
may have benefitted from OT services in the past . This desire to be inclusive of current and prior patients means that the race will be friendly towards runners / walkers with disabilities .

Working to stay within the budget has helped foster creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit as the students reach out to multiple vendors to price necessary items and compare notes on options . Items needing to be priced and ordered include runner favors like t-shirts and medals , as well as products for maintaining nutrition / hydration , and staying warm on race day . As the event approaches , we will finalize our
