LIVING Barren County Fair celebrated annually in Temple Hill BY DANIEL SUDDEATH Barren County’s HOMECOMING 6 Glasgow-Barren County, Kentucky: Illuminated July in southcentral Kentucky is marked by warm temperatures, Independence Day and the Barren County Fair. The 62nd annual Barren County Fair will be held July 14 through July 23 on the fairgrounds at 10168 Tompkinsville Road off Highway 63 in the Temple Hill community. Sponsored by the Temple Hill Lions Club, the fair is a major summertime attraction in Barren County that also draws people from surrounding communities. From carnival rides to truck and tractor pulls, the Barren County Fair has dozens of activities for everyone in the family. Beauty contests, cornhole tournaments and open dairy and beef shows are just a few of the events that take place during the fair. The event is strongly supported by the community and highlights some of the best that Barren County has to offer. At the heart of the fair is the Temple Hill Lions Club, which organized a community fair 62 years ago that was held annually in July on the grounds of Temple Hill School. It started as a Temple Hill community fair, but the event enjoyed resounding success and eventually became Barren County’s fair. It launched with a walking horse show and beauty contests, and even a mule show. The fair grew, and the area needed to put on the annual event expanded as well. The Lions Club purchased surrounding property in order to have room for a track to host truck and tractor pulling competitions. By the early 1990s, the fair had again outgrown its grounds. The Lions Club purchased the current fairgrounds, which included some of the present buildings, and began making improvements to the property.
