ENTERTAINMENT Quite the shindig Shindig on the Square is back in 2016 BY MELINDA J. OVERSTREET GLASGOW – It started with an idea some merchants had to encourage shoppers who can’t get downtown during normal business hours to explore their stores. It was called the Third Thursday Shop Around Downtown. Stores stayed open later and offered special deals, and restaurants kept later hours to accommodate the shoppers. Dick Doty took an interest in the event in 2015 after becoming mayor, and talked others into getting involved and further fueling some fun. The new version was renamed the Shindig on the Square. “The shindig was basically an effort to try to bring some life to downtown [and] capitalize on the success of the Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market that has been in place for years,” Doty said, “so we incorporated them in the form of a night market and then added to that with the third Thursday, which is a group of downtown retailers that were staying open on Thursday nights trying to draw 22 Glasgow-Barren County, Kentucky: Illuminated retail business to the downtown square. It was kind of a collaborative effort between those two to bring people downtown and support both of those, and then it just kind of grew from there.” Besides the farmers market on the courthouse lawn, other additions were free cartoons at the Plaza Theatre and live music on the public square.
