I think this makes a much more interesting album than full-throttle throughout , and adds a dimension to the record that you can ' t find on a lot of other metal records . I feel like it makes sense though , the fast songs are like the battles themselves and the end is picking up the pieces in the ruins afterwards .

Mosh : Were you adamant about moving away from the band ’ s early war-themed stance with this release ? John Kevill : My stance has always been the same , but our more recent material captures it more accurately . Our early material was more action movie-esque as I simply wasn ' t the writer I am today . I am fascinated by warfare and the role it plays in history and human endeavor , but I am utterly against it as well . I think since metal embodies evil , warfare is an absolutely real-life evil and sonically fits very well with the machine-gun cadences in thrash metal .

Mosh : The album has an explosive , in-your-face production . What were you trying to achieve sound wise ? John Kevill : We wanted organic sounds , nothing fake , but huge , powerful , and clear . The aim was to strike a balance between a really aggressive sound with total clarity too . Mike Plotnikoff did a great job on this one .

Mosh : You ’ ve always had killer cover art on your albums . For Woe to the Vanquished , what kind of direction did you give revered artist Andreas Marschall ? John Kevill : For this one I showed Andreas a photo , the pyramid on the cover was a real

It was a pyramid of 12,000 German spiked helmets displayed as a victory monument in New York City , 1918 . I wanted to take that monument and play up the imperial Roman / Fascist type imagery to make a gigantic evil monument . Andreas suggested that all the people should be gone and there should only be cold stone and the guns in their rows , which I thought was great conceptually . He came out with amazing work from the beginning .

Mosh : You ’ ll be playing Chicago on Sept . 20 at The Forge with Dark Tranquillity . What do you like the most about playing here ? John Kevill : Chicago has been great for us since we first came there in 2008 . I ' m just always happy to see people turn up to the show in force and mosh with a vengeance . Hope to see everyone in attendance at the concert , we will be playing Woe to the Vanquished in full on this tour !
