Continued from page 12 Jean e - l Mich this famous jazz club in Paris, and I was ust a little kid, hanging around in the club in the afternoons. I saw John Coltrane, Don Cherry, Chet Baker, and I had no idea who any of these guys were. But for my eighth IE: There was uproar when smoking was banned in French restaurants a few years ago. Let’s hope your culture’s Gitanes-chic coolness won’t be lost in the so-called declining years. JMJ: Obviously, the idea of Declinism is there to sell papers, because darkness – or blackness – is always more sexy than white. Like night is more sexy than the day. But I think in this kind of despair, or dark moments, is where art is sometimes the most exciting and interesting. So at the same time you have Declinism, you have a lot of young artists reacting against it. Like what’s going on with Donald Trump – I think it will create a new Bob Dylan. It’s always positive for art, having a declared enemy, somebody to react against. There is nothing worse than being 05•2017 birthday, Chet Baker sat me on the upright piano and played for me for five minutes. And each time I talk about this, I can still feel the air from his trumpet on my chest. And this was the shock of my life at the time – understanding the power of sound on your body. I understood there and then that our job as musicians is to make the air vibrate. And it’s very invisible as a job, but doing it can create someone’s desire to move their body, or even trigger tears or outright joy. It’s just about moving the air in a specific way, And as a career, I think it’s amazing. in a society where everything is more or less just okay. IE: And if people want to ground them- selves, they can always read – or re-read – Exupery’s “The Little Prince.” JMJ: You’re absolutely right. It’s so univer- sal. I was involved with the family, because they asked me at one point to get involved with a project surrounding The Little Prince, but it was too difficult so I gave up. But it’s obviously something very symbolic and very interesting, the idea of how isolated yet Jean-Michel Jarre how linked we all are. So I think people should read “The Little Prince” today. And I also think that would be really good advice for Donald Trump. We should send him a copy of the book, you know?
