Ray Alder : I think it just happened naturally . I mean , me and Jim had talked about it before . We discussed where we wanted the album to go , a vibe and flow of the album . We basically agreed to do something sort of catchier and shorter songs with catchy choruses . Of course , we were going to add a long song in there , which is what we do . We definitely knew what we wanted to do before we started to write .
Mosh : What ’ s your favorite track off Theories that you enjoy playing live the most ? Ray Alder : “ The Light and Shade of Things ” is probably my favorite one so far to do live . It ’ s 14-minutes long , but it goes by so fast . It feels like a four-minute song . It ’ s just a cool song with lots of multiple parts , really heavy with a big chorus . Now we have Mike and Joey singing the chorus with three parts [ harmonies ] going on . It ’ s probably the song I look forward to the most in the set . This time we ’ re actually doing a song , " SOS " that we didn ’ t do on the European tour .
Mosh : You ’ ll be playing the Forge on the 24th , what in particular do like about playing in the Chicago-area ? Ray Alder : It ’ s just a great audience . I know this because we ’ ve been there a few times . I remember years ago we were in Chicago with Queensrÿche and Dream Theater and it was a great show with a great audience . Every time we go there we feel great . But it seems like every time we go we ’ re playing

Mosh : I loved your performances with Engine and Redemption . Are these extracurricular projects away from Fates a necessary outlet for you to keep things fresh ? Ray Alder : Yeah , definitely . Obviously , there ’ s a lot of time between , so you have to fill that void with something . I have ideas kicking around sometimes that aren ’ t going to flow right with Fates . The Engine thing was like that . At that point I was into bands like Deftones and Soulfly . So I wanted to do something similar . I can ’ t sing like those guys but it was something I had in my head music wise . It ’ s definitely something fun to do besides Fates .
Mosh : What are your plans for a new album and hopefully it won ’ t take longer than three years like previous releases . Ray Alder : The plan right now is to keep touring as much as possible . We ’ re constantly trying to book new shows . Jim and I are talking about doing more shows in the fall before Christmas . There ’ s no talks now about a new album , we haven ’ t even begun to discuss that . In July it ’ ll be a year since the album was released and I don ’ t want to go on that route of nine years again !
