arrived on the scene like a scythe-wielding
Grim Reaper, dripping with existential
angst and societal despair. But Mars – who
flew to France for ten days every month,
until enough material was tracked –
swears that he doesn’t know enough about
politics to converse at length on the sub-
ject. “As an artist living in a big city, my
opinions are pretty predictable,” he sighs.
“But my music isn’t – it’s unpredictable. So
we were trying to set up an environment
where we came up with unpredictable
things, and that may be why the record is
so apolitical and detached. Because we
