Disco Demolition Revisted

Photo courtesy of Paul Natkin It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “ Teen Night ” designed to sell tickets at
Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a 97.9 FM The Loop – until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago ’ s rich baseball history . Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12 , 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city ’ s weirdest moments . Inspired by the book by Steve Dahl , with journalist Dave
Steve Dahl , 1979
Hoekstra and photographer Paul Natkin , the exhibit uses video footage , artifacts , interviews , memorabilia , and photographs by Natkin to examine the culture and the music . It ' s all ' s displayed at the Elmhurst History Museum ( 120 E . Park Ave .) through October 8th .

Hello , My Name is Ali

UB40 - Ali Campbell center
It was a pop-cultural inevitability . Arguably , one of the most definitive numbers from British reggae outfit UB40 is “ Red Red Wine ,” its lilting cover of the old Neil Diamond chestnut from its chart-topping 1983 covers disc , Labour of Love . Both abroad and in America , the delightful track helped to break the band , which went on to sell over 70 million albums , to date . And now , three decades on , the group recently teamed with Eminent Life vintners in England to introduce its own official Red Red Wine UB40 , a Bordeaux Superieur that – according to frontman Ali Campbell – is as pleasing to the palate as the song that inspired it . “ We got together with a guy called Jerome at Eminent Life , and that ’ s where you can get it – online at eminentlife . co . uk ,” he reveals . “ It ’ s a cross between Murdoch and Sauvignon Blanc grapes , and it ’ s a very , very fine wine . So we do have our own Red Red Wine now – we launched it over Christmas at the Arts Club in London , which is all very arty .” It ’ s a nice ray of optimistic sunshine in an otherwise overcast past few years for the man – who just happens to be one of the greatest vocal stylists in modern music – after he departed UB40 Mach One in 2008 over managerial disputes , followed by keyboardist Mickey Virtue the same year , and co-vocalist Astro in 2013 . Led by Campbell ’ s brother and guitarist Robin , the group continued performing under the original name , until Campbell , Virtue , and Astro decided to reclaim their legacy and reunite under the banner of UB40 , featuring Ali , Astro , and Mickey . “ So people know they ’ re getting the real deal ,” Campbell says .
