Joy December 25th Directed by David O’Russell Rated PG-13 The true story of Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence), a young, single mother of three who invented a range of household products (Huggable Hangers, the Miracle Mop) that eventually made her a millionaire through HSN. The film reunites Lawrence with frequent costar Bradley Cooper and director David O’Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) along with Robert De Niro, Isabella Rossellini, Dascha Polanco, Virginia Madsen, Elisabeth Rohm and Edgar Ramirez. Lawrence, Cooper and O'Russell have already proven their success as a team so this will probably be another big hit for the trio. Yet he’s quick to point out that it will also contain the requisite violence and bleakness you’ve come to expect and love in his films. Set in Wyoming six years after the Civil War, the film tells the story of a bounty hunter (Kurt Russell) and his female prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) as they encounter another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) who also claims to be a sheriff. Seeking shelter from a blizzard, they travel to a remote stagecoach stop on a snowy mountain pass where they meet more strangers at Minnie’s Haberdashery. Stuck in close quarters tensions flare, deception and betrayed abound and blood will be spilled. The cast also includes Channing Tatum, Zoe Bell, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen. The Revenant December 25th Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu Rated R Alejandro González Iñárritu follows up his multiple Oscar-winning Birdman with the greatly anticipated The Revenant, based on true events. American fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is exploring uncharted wilderness in the 1820’s when he is brutally mauled by a bear and abandoned by his fellow explorers, including friend and confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Glass survives and sets out to exact revenge on the people who left him for dead. Fueled by grief and vengeance, Glass must use all of his survival skills as he treks through the frozen winter terrain to get back to his beloved family. With the brutal storyline, grueling shooting locations, exquisite cinematography and the outstanding performance of DiCaprio as a man pushed to the edge, this is definitely one to investigate.
