No man’s land? Leaving 21st Century Conflict
This poster will explore my current research with former military personnel and their
experiences of leaving 21st century conflict. It will draw attention to the themes that
are beginning to emerge from the data, as well as briefly highlighting my
methodology, which includes photo elicitation. One of the themes that the poster will
display is the multiplicity of identities that exist in the veteran population. Leaving the
military and no longer feeling like a ‘squaddie’, combined with never feeling ‘civilian’,
can leave personnel in ‘no man’s land’. The poster will engage directly with the
conference theme of ‘Outside the Frame and thinking differently’ by presenting
alternative constructions of the soldier and veteran, as well as considering those that
are currently outside the frame of Criminology.
