Formative moments in education that inspire careers: A case
example of senior academics working in primary care
Rationale: Exploring the career path and education of senior academics can provide
inspiration and insight for more junior colleagues and may have implications for
undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as for institutions wishing to
support a culture of continuing development of staff and students. One way of
exploring a career path is to understand the “formative moments” within an
individual’s education that critically inspired them. Analysing formative moments
may aid in the understanding of the motivating factors, opportunities and challenges
that contribute to career growth. Methods: A case study approach will be used.
Senior academic staff in Primary Care will be invited to present their “Careers in
Context” as part of an ongoing Athena Swan initiative aimed at inspiring emerging
researchers (n=6). Discourse analysis of the slides will form the basis for a matched
semi structured interview with each presenter. Themes of motivation, challenges
and opportunities will be explored. Discourse analysis of the combined data will be
carried out as part of an INSPIRE summer project for a medical student.
Dissemination: Results will be disseminated at the Keele INSPIRE conference, the
Association for the Study of Medical Education, the Athena Swan Primary Care team
and the Keele Careers Advice team.
