Saja Mohammed Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine Investigation into the role of a novel gene in breast cancer The active, controlled nature of cell death has presented the possibility that cell death can be manipulated where it goes wrong. For example in cancer, where not enough cell death occurs, stimulation of cell death is necessary to the removal of cancer cells. On the other hand, during brain injury, or during brain diseases like Alzheimer's disease, preventing nerve cells from dying is important to prevent the excessive loss of the cells. In order to manipulate cell death, we need to understand how it occurs and, most importantly, how it is controlled. The complicated mechanisms that control the growth and survival of human cells are still far from fu
