Welcome from the Director
I am delighted to welcome you to the Institute’s first postgraduate conference. This
is an opportunity for students to communicate their work to a wide cross disciplinary
audience and for everyone to see and appreciate the diversity of work going on
across the university.
Posters are an important and well-recognized part of academic work and
communication and the schools and faculties already provide a number of
opportunities for students to present and discuss their work in this way. Today,
however, offers something alternative and differently challenging, a chance to share
your work with people outside your area, a non-specialist, lay audience, and to
engage them in your subject and your ideas. A successful day will be one that gets
people thinking and talking about connections across the disciplines and looking
afresh at aspects of their own work.
I’d like to thank everyone who has submitted work, all of the conference attendees
and visitors and also all of the staff from across the university who have supported
the Institute and helped to make the day possible.
Enjoy the conference; I hope that it is a stimulating and fruitful day for all.
