1. Creates an environment in which both the:

- Coach and Client build trust and respect for the coaching relationship, or the

- Mentor and Client build trust and respect for the mentoring relationship.

2. Shows genuine concern for the Client’s well-being and future.

3. Responds to a Client’s emotions with empathy, without personally becoming involved.

4. Shows respect for the Client and holds only constructive thoughts, by not judging the Client’s thoughts, words, and actions; during and after the entire relationship.

5. Removes any judgements of the Client, such that the Coach or Mentor be completely objective and compassionate in the coaching or mentoring process.

6. During the session the Coach or Mentor remains neutral, showing neither approval nor disapproval of the Client’s thoughts, words and actions.

7. During the session, the Mentor draws on their own practically gained experience to aid the Client’s position and is comfortable sharing views when necessary or when requested by the Client.

This Core Competency is not applicable to Coaches.

8. Uses neutrality to establish trust and prevents the Client from trying to please the Coach or Mentor, or avoiding their disapproval.

9. Creates a positive experience for the Client.

10. Creates an environment which enables the Client to freely explore, unhindered by the ideas and thoughts of the Coach or Mentor.

11. Creates a positive enjoyable experience for the Client.

12. Has no agenda for the Client and is not attached to the outcomes.

13. Treats the Client as an equal partner in the coaching or mentoring journey.

14. Allows the Client to choose their own pace of accomplishment.

15. The Coach or Mentor is not attached to the outcomes.

16. An experienced Coach or Mentor should show continued interest in a Client throughout the coaching or mentoring relationship.
