Fortunately, a successful captive breeding program at the Charles Darwin Research Station has led to the reintroduc- tion of land iguanas on Baltra, where their population is now stable. The runways on the island are still used as an operational airport and this was our final stop before leaving the islands. As I looked out of the window of the airport shuttle bus that took us across the island to our plane, I spotted three yellow land iguanas basking in the sun. It was a great way to end the trip – a testament to how successful conservation efforts have been in restoring this species to its natural home. For any wildlife or reptile lover, it’s not a matter of if you should visit the Galapagos Islands; it’s a matter of when. My short time spent travelling through the islands was filled with memorable encounters with animals. The rich natural beauty of the enchanted islands, with abundant wildlife at every step, will truly stay with you forever. Above: Marine Iguanas converve heat by huddling together in groups.
