adequate UVB penetration when rested above mesh lids , unlike the T8 tubes .
Compact UV lights .
These are small fluorescent tubes that have been twisted and compressed so that they can be used with a conventional screw-in Edison fitting . Compact UV lights are widely used in the reptile hobby ; they are small , energy efficient , use a standard E27 fitting and are one of the cheapest lighting options available . The UVB output is not particularly directional , and reflective domes can be used to improve focus . Likewise , the UVB strength is also quite weak , and usually only effective over a distance of up to about 30cm . Compact UV lights must therefore be positioned close to the animals ’ basking spot so that they can absorb UVB rays whilst basking under their heat source . These lights typically have a relatively short lifespan and should be replaced every 6 months , however , there are some stronger models now available in Australia that can last up to 10-12 months .
Mercury vapour globes . substitute for the real thing , and regular exposure to natural sunlight is hugely beneficial for captive reptiles ’ health . Reptiles will enjoy short periods of time spent outside under direct supervision , and there are also a number of mesh or screen terrariums that can be used as short term ‘ sunning ’ enclosures outdoors . Remember that reptiles can overheat very quickly in the sun , so they must always be supervised or have the option to move into the shade whenever they wish .
Like all aspects of reptile keeping , when it comes to setting up your enclosure with the correct equipment , seek the advice of an experienced keeper or visit your local specialist reptile store for assistance . These are large , powerful globes that emit a combination of strong heat , as well as high-output , focussed UVB . Mercury vapour globes are ideal for arid species in large enclosures . Due to the nature of these globes ( which operate off an internal ballast ) they can only be used in conjunction with specific thermostats , otherwise there is a risk they may blow . They are also very long lasting and can emit adequate UVB for 12 months or more . The quality and durability of these globes has improved significantly in recent years .
Metal halide lamps .
These are not yet common in Australia , but are capable of delivering UVA and UVB together with heating . They are long-lived and beneficial for plants , but are relatively expensive and typically require a special fixture . Metal halide lamps are very powerful and due to intense output of UV and heat , they are suitable only for larger enclosures housing species with high requirements for UV and heat .
Natural sunlight exposure .
Whilst UV lighting technologies have come a long way in recent years in terms of their quality and longevity , ultimately there is still no complete
Right : it is imperative that this beautiful Northern Spiny-tailed Gecko ( Strophurus ciliaris ) be provided with artificial UV light in captivity . For some other geckos , this may not be absolutely necessary , although UV light is known to induce changes in their behaviour .
