The ‘ Wrangler ’ Writes ... iHerp Australia

Hello again and welcome to another issue of Australia ’ s favourite digital reptile and amphibian magazine ! And thank you all for your overwhelming response to our first two issues . Please continue to spread the word , because as always it is FREE to subscribe and download ! Don ’ t forget , we also produce a very limited number of high-quality , souvenir hard copies of each issue ; these sell fast and the only way to get your hands on one is via our website or Kellyville Pets and Amazing Amazon , our key retail supporters . Speaking of supporters , we are delighted to welcome Absolute Aquariums and Exo-Terra as major sponsors – stay tuned ; apart from great gear , Exo-terra are famed for their epic expeditions !
You may have noticed a new face in Issue 2 ( check out ‘ A Visit to the Vet ’ and ‘ Food for Thought ’). ‘ Bob the Beardie ’ is our new mascot , and is likely to pop up anywhere . He lists his interests as footy , BBQs and head bobbing .
We have a couple of very exciting projects in the pipeline , but first of all , this issue is once again full of great articles . Mitchell Hodgson has an introduction to keeping the charming smaller species of dragons , while Gordon Canning has contributed an intriguing piece on the turtle hunters of west Arnhem Land , and Ben Dessen will make you green with envy with his tales from the Galapagos . Kit Prendergast has some surprising facts about crocodile hearts , Neville Burns has a chat with Steve Wilson ( now there ’ s a familiar name ), and Michael Cermak proves to be extremely adept at preserving reptile skulls . Plus Ben Dessen is back with an essential guide to choosing the most appropriate UV lighting .
There is one article I have omitted so far , and the subject matter is plastered on our cover ! The ongoing Shingleback project at Bundey Bore in South Australia is one of the most celebrated pieces of herpetological research to come out of Australia ( and certainly the longest running ). With the untimely death of two of the main researchers , funding is now uncertain . So , along with some talented and generous photographers , we are producing some exclusive signed posters to help raise funds – all proceeds will go to this great work . Keep your eye on our website , as we will be loading it up with some amazing items just in time for Xmas ! We ’ re going to try to help out a couple of other worthy causes as well , including the Gnaraloo Turtle Conservation Program ( see article in Issue 2 ), which is desperately trying to raise funds for a new tracking program .
Which brings to my final point ; our I . T . champion , Andy Round , is attempting to become a multi-media celebrity . Seriously , Andy is launching monthly iHerp podcasts , and his first guest is Karen Hattingh , the chief scientist at Gnaraloo , who is an incredibly engaging and passionate speaker , and has some amazing things to share with us . So , once again , keep your eyes peeled on the web site for further details .
Happy Herping !
