Neville Burns did not need to be asked twice to travel
to a special forum of indigenous rangers in Far North
Queensland.
When I received a message to call
my friend Joe Sambono, I certainly
wasn’t expecting to be invited to
present shows and training in
snake relocation at a very special
meeting of 300 indigenous rangers
in Burketown, Queensland. I have
been part of the local Indigenous
peoples’ Naidoc Day celebrations
on several occasions and have
always enjoyed it, so I jumped at
the offer. Joe had arranged for me
to work with Euan Edwards, a
friend and licensed Queensland
exhibitor. Euan had by far the
heavier workload as he had to
bring the snakes, handling gear,
pit and gazebo, and was also
responsible for the Powerpoint
presentation, while I had only to
turn up with my audio system.
I flew into Cairns late on the
Sunday where I was picked up by
Euan, his wife and their friend
Molly, who assists Euan with the
animals. Euan did all the driving
