Malaika’s belief is that education is the key to sustainability. While there is no official recycling program in the DRC, the staff make a point of teaching students about the process and the benefits, particularly reducing water usage and the importance of trees to the environment.
SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE FUTURE
In the DRC, many trees are cut down to make charcoal for cooking or brick making, and they are a common and relied upon source of income. The teachers highlight alternatives to charcoal, and the girls in return share these learnings with their families.
