At the age of 18, Boyan invented a system through which, driven by the ocean currents, the plastic would concentrate itself, reducing the theoretical cleanup time from millennia to mere years. By utilizing ocean currents, the passive drifting systems are estimated to clean up half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 year’s time. The concentrated plastic will be brought back to shore for recycling and made into durable products.

The first beta cleanup system was deployed in San Francisco Bay in Sept. 2018 and towed to the Great Garbage Patch. After System 001’s first mission, it was towed back to shore for upgrades and improvements. Relaunching is now in the works!
