Your favourite bait to use? The first thing I pack in my baitbox when I go fishing is always chokka. Probably the most versatile bait one can use and most fish in the ocean will eat it. There are also countless ways of presenting it to a fish. Do you fish any other facets? I try do a bit of everything, but I am very passionate about Bass Angling. Lure angling in general really interests me and fooling a fish with an artificial lure is the ultimate challenge to me. Best time to fish and why? All the time! If you have a bait in the water, you have a chance. Some of my most memorable catches have been made in the most unfavourable conditions. Your favourite place to fish and why? I wouldn’t say that I have one specific location which is my favourite but places such as Kosi Bay, the Transkei, Jeffrey’s Bay and Struisbaai come to mind, each for its own unique reason. Be it the beauty of the area, the remoteness or how wild the fishing can be when it’s on fire. Advice to upcoming anglers? The more you fish the better you’ll get. See every opportunity as a chance to learn and gain experience. Go fishing with experienced anglers whenever the opportunity presents itself, there is so much knowledge out there. Don’t be scared to ask questions. Your “Go To” bait when fishing is tough? Every situation varies, but when fishing locally I’d generally scale down my tackle, make a small “bullet-like” bait of some sort (generally wrapped in chokka) on a short dingle dangle and throw it as far as possible. Everything from a small Dusky Shark to a stray edible fish would generally have a go at a bait like that. Most challenging thing when fishing? I believe strongly that fishing competitively and even socially is as much a mental game as it is physical. Being able to keep your head in the game and make good decisions even when the guy standing next to you is giving you a hiding is what separates the good anglers from the rest of the pack in the long run. Remember, the difference between a good days fishing and a day to forget can sometimes come down to only one bite, so be ready for it. Do you have a reason that makes you compete? I am a competitive person by nature so if I’m going to take the time to do something, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability. When I walk off the beach after a compo, I know I’ve given it my 100%. Your tackle preference? Assassin rods, Shimano reels, JDB braid
