Vehicle and Category: Mercedes Throttle Pedal Fault Symptoms • ESP, BAS and pre-safe message showing on the dash. • Fault codes stored for the throttle pedal sensor B37. • Customer complains of hold function, hill start assist, trailer destablisation and unavailable adaptive brake lights. • Normally you can cycle the ignition and then the warnings should disappear for a short time before coming back. Cause The fault is the throttle pedal, but the actual cause may be pins at the throttle pedal rather than wiring or the pedal itself. Repair 1. Visual inspection of the pins. You should be looking to see if they are spread open or contaminated with water/corrosion. 2. If damaged, it’s worth replacing pins as this fixes around 80% of complaints of this nature. This could help avoid an expensive incorrect diagnosis to do with the throttle or ECU. 3. Make sure wiring is in good condition by checking connections at the engine ECU and ensuring there is no water ingress. 4. Carry out a load test of the wiring from the ECU to the throttle pedal. This will prove the integrity of the wiring and that it is capable of carrying a voltage and reliable signal to the ECU. 14 CAPRICORN IGNITION MARCH 2018 Tech Tip provided by:
