It was written by teachers showing other teachers how to get the most out of
students — creatively, socially, academically. It includes lesson ideas, teaching
techniques, as well as a month-by-month program for incorporating this strategy,
research-based activities, lesson plans, and feedback from teachers and parents.”
Why She Recommends It
“This book allows teachers to try something new in their classroom — something
that may truly impact students. Unfortunately, some students grow up believing
they can’t do something — that they are not capable because they are not “good”
at it. This type of mindset is fixed.
However, with the growth mindset approach embedded in our classrooms,
students will have more opportunity to believe they can improve with hard work
and patience — that their intelligence in an area is not fixed, rather it can grow!”
Margie Kilpatrick
4th Grade Teacher
St. Katharine of Siena School
Margie’s Summary
“Set in Virginia in 1791, an orphaned immigrant girl, Levinia, is taken
to the home of the ship’s captain, to be raised by a kitchen slave named
Belle. In turn, Levinia is trained to cook and clean, alongside Belle, and
eventually becomes the caretaker for the captain’s newborn son.
As time passes, Levinia learns the secrets on the farm, and experiences,
firsthand, being in ‘limbo’ between slavery and freedom. Families, human
ties, along with mysteries from the past, unfold as the yearning for
freedom sparks empathy and compassion for the main characters.”
Why She Recommends It
“The Kitchen House is an interesting historical fiction that gives an eye-
opening perspective on slavery in the Old South, as well as white slavery,
or indentured servitude.
It gives a personal perspective on the lives of slaves and indentured
servants in America during the early 1800s.”
