Another theory why people
fidget is that they suff er
problems with attention. It
has been shown that people
who fidget a lot tend to mind
wander/daydream more
and as they fidget whatever
tasks they are doing tend to
suff er. However, it isn’t yet
known whether fidgeting is
the cause or the solution to
their attention problems, as
fidgeting can help us to both
calm or stimulate our attention
levels. That fidgeting can
help has been demonstrated
through research on children
with ADHD. When allowed to
move their body, for example
by spinning their chair, children

with ADHD did better on some
cognitive tasks than neurotypical
children for whom spinning and
freedom of movement had no
beneficial eff ect.
