Drones vary in type , from traditional drones to quadcopters , hexacopters and multi-rotor crafts . Most though have four rotas for stability . They range from mini remote control forms which fit in the palm of your hand , without cameras , costing around £ 10 , to starter drones with cameras from about £ 50 upwards . From drones that can be controlled by smartphones to drones that fly your smartphone . They can offer video feeds to help fly the drone , to video footage with a high enough quality to share with others on the internet . You get what you pay for and if you are looking for stabilised good quality video footage then realistically you are looking at a starting price of several hundred pounds . You also need to factor in the cost of batteries for the controller , spare power units for the drone , if available , ( remember most drones only have 5-15 minutes flying time ) and repairs !
While you don ’ t need a license to operate one for leisure purposes , drone operation comes with some rules . In the UK the Civil Aviation Authority has issued a Dronecode . Drones are required to be flown within line of sight , reaching no higher than just under 122 metres , ( 400ft ), which is 13 metres short of the height of the London Eye and no further than 500 metres away horizontally . You also cannot fly near airports or aircraft for safety reasons , or if your drone has a camera , within smashingdrones . com / best-drones-under-100 / Buying drones for under £ 100
