The word was coined by English paleontologist Richard Owen in 1842 and was meant to refer to Dinosaurs impressive size rather than their scary appearance. zz The first dinosaur to be formally named was the Megalosaurus, back in 1824. It was named in 1824 by Reverend William Buckland. Megalosaurus means ‘great lizard’ and it was about 9 metres long, and 3 metres tall. zz The Biggest Dinosaurs were the Sauropods. Seismosaurus was about 50 metres long. Argentinosaurus was the heaviest at 100 tons. The Brachiosaurus was around 12 metres high (which helped it reach branches in trees). Gigantosaurus was the largest hunting dinosaur, at approximately 14 metres long and up to 8 tons! zz Dinosaur eggs are many shapes and sizes. Some are up to 40cm long or more. But bigger eggs didn’t always mean bigger dinosaurs. Some very large dinosaurs had small eggs. The first dinosaur egg fossils were found in France in 1869. Many dinosaur eggs found still have their original shells. zz The tallest dinosaurs were the Brachiosaurid group of sauropods. Their front legs were longer than the rear legs giving them a giraffe-like stance. This combined with their extremely long necks, which were held vertically, meant they could browse off the tallest trees. Sauroposeidon was massive and probably grew to 18.5 metres tall making it the tallest dinosaur. zz At 20cm long, a T. rex tooth was the largest tooth of any carnivore. zz At 1.5 metres high, 1.2 metres wide, the largest bone in the world is the backbone of Argentinosaurus, a plant-eating dinosaur. 3 | FUSE
