Stanley Basin Recreation Area
Located between Stanley and Redfish Lake many visitors stay in the
nearby plush resort or campout in the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains
and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
Redfish Lake is named for the brilliant sockeye salmon that once came
to spawn in such massive quantities that the lake appeared red. The
visitor center offers a variety of interpretive activities and evening programs; including exhibits about the area’s geology, history and wildlife.
Guests can also find three different auto tape/cd tours for the three
scenic byways that converge in this area. This is a wonderful family
activity area as well as a centerpiece for fishing, hiking and hunting.

Yankee Fork Gold Dredge
This relic of long-gone mining practices lies along the dirt road just
north of the Sunbeam Dam and Yankee Fork turnoff on state Highway 75 north of Stanley. Parts for the dredge were shipped by train to
Mackay, then hauled by trucks to Yankee Fork and assembled in 1940.
Essentially a large barge, the dredge is 112 feet long and 54 feet wide,
with a four-story superstructure that is 64 feet high and weighs nearly
one thousand tons. The dredge housed machines that scoured the river
banks with a mouth-like bucket on a continuously revolving belt, sifting rock through several washing processes, retaining small deposits of
gold, then spewing unwanted residue out the dredge’s rear onto tailings
piles. History and mining buffs will enjoy this, and many other attractions in the Land of the Yankee Fork.
