Perrine Bridge Shoshone Ice Caves The I. B. Perrine Bridge at Twin Falls spans four lanes, carrying U.S. Highway 93 over the Snake River Canyon. The bridge serves as Twin Falls' main link to Jerome County and Interstate 84. The original bridge was opened to traffic in September 1927, and at the time was the highest bridge in the world. Perrine Bridge is the only manmade structure in the United States where BASE jumping is allowed year-round without a permit. As such, it is a popular destination for BASE jumping enthusiasts, who often refer to it as the Potato Bridge. This natural wonder is actually a lava tube that is 1,000 feet long and varies between 8 and 30 feet in height. Take a tour and explore the trails, but be sure to dress warmly, even during the summer months. The temperature inside the cave remains at 50 degrees year-round; during the summer it is a significant departure from the desert above. The ice is created by air currents flowing through the tubes, which freeze the water. Not to be missed, these caves are a natural wonder. Guides explain the geologic, volcanic, and historical background in these large lava ice caves. The adjacent museum contains Indian artifacts, gems, and minerals of local and world interests.
