In 1863, after huge gold and silver deposits were discovered in the
Owyhee Mountains, thousands flocked to the area seeking their fortunes. Silver City, established in 1864, once had hundreds of buildings including eight saloons, six general stores and a hospital. About 75
structures remain. Hardly a ghost town, the area is an excellent example
of a historic mining town. Don’t miss the antique-filled Idaho Hotel
(1866) and the Post Office-Drugstore. Or try your luck panning for
gold. Roads are closed by snow from early November until late May.
