Today, visitors can experience over 100 years of Idaho’s unique prison history with a visit to Solitary Confinement, cell blocks, and the Gallows. The Old Idaho Penitentiary features thirty historic buildings and special exhibitions including the J. Curtis Earl Memorial Exhibit of Arms and Armaments. Events and programs provide visitors an opportunity to relive the Old Pen's exciting past of daring escapes, scandals, and executions. Boise, ID 83712 (208) 334-2844 In 1863, after huge gold and silver deposits were discovered in the Owyhee Mountains, thousands flocked to the area seeking their fortunes. Silver City, established in 1864, once had hundreds of buildings including eight saloons, six general stores and a hospital. About 75 structures remain. Hardly a ghost town, the area is an excellent example of a historic mining town. Don’t miss the antique-filled Idaho Hotel (1866) and the Post Office-Drugstore. Or try your luck panning for gold. Roads are closed by snow from early November until late May. Check conditions before visiting. Until 1869, this was one of the most famous river crossings on the historic trail. The Glenns Ferry community sponsors a crossing commemoration the second Saturday in August. Exhibits at the visitor center educate and entertain with intimate encounters with live birds of prey, including the endangered California condor, harpy eagle, and aplomado falcon. preservation of American World War II aviation history.
