Introduction Several books or maybe a mini-series would be required to provide a complete, detailed story depicting the development of the interlocking concrete pavement industry in North America. This publication provides highlights only, concentrating on key people, projects, cultures, companies, and economic forces that shaped it. Like the start of other industries, it all begins with inspired people. For concrete pavers, that inspiration came from industry leaders mostly in Europe and the United Kingdom over the past 40 years. In the world of pavements, however, 40 years is a short ride. The past 25 years for ICPI is even shorter. Still shorter is the year 2018 with about a billion square feet (92.9 million m 2 ) of pavers and slabs sold in Canada and the U.S. Looking back over last year or over the past 25, it’s been a great ride, but there’s way more to do ahead, and the best is yet to come.
