Mr. Schlegel hired Bobby Staten in 1988 who engaged the national network of Home Depot home center stores for retail paver sales in 1991. Eventually growing to 25 manufacturing locations across the U.S., sales to Home Depot grew to a significant share of Pavestone’s sales. After passing through ownership a few times, Pavestone eventually was purchased by Quikrete in 2012, a well-established, retail and commercial construction materials company selling products through thousands of home center stores, hardware stores, and construction material outlets. Pavestone was renamed Keystone Hardscapes in 2018. The introduction of pavers to home center stores provided daily exposure to thousands of potential customers. Pavestone helped move this expansion forward. Started in 1980, Pavestone owner Bob Schlegel was new to the concrete paver industry having succeeded financially in nursing homes in Ontario. Pavestone started manufacturing on a Hess machine in Grapevine, then a hamlet west of Dallas, TX. Also from Ontario, David Bender was a partner and helped grow the business. The presence of paving products in Home Depot (now at 2,000 stores) and later in Lowe’s (now at 2,394 stores), as well as other regional home center stores and thousands of landscape retailers, provided unprecedented national exposure to the residential market. This exposure is a type of constant national advertising. Simultaneous to distribution through home center stores was creation and delivery of elegant product catalogs by many paver manufacturers for contractors, retail outlets (dealers), home shows and homeowners. All of this exposure sold a lifestyle with concrete pavers that helped shift the market from primarily commercial sales to residential in the 1990s. With a maturing boomer generation accompanied by increasing wealth and home ownership, the residential market unfolded in the late 1990s. Tumbled pavers created the stone look sold at concrete paver prices. 1 4 • I C P I C O M M E M O R AT I V E P U B L I C AT I O N
