ΚΑΡΑΒΑΝ ΣΑΡΑΪ
To επιβλητικό κτηριακό συγκρότημα στη γωνία των οδών Βενιζέλου και Βαμβακά, πίσω ακριβώς από το Χαμζά Μπέη Τζαμί (Αλκαζάρ), κατασκευάστηκε πάνω στα ερείπια παλαιότερου κτηρίου του 15ου αιώνα, το οποίο -όπως εξάλλου προδίδει το όνομά του- λειτούργησε (και) ως
πανδοχείο. Από την Οθωμανική Περίοδο έως τον Εμφύλιο, κατείχε πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο στις ιστορικές εξελίξεις. Έγινε βιβλίο και ταινία, το
1986, σε σκηνοθεσία Τάσου Ψαρρά, ενώ ένα τμήμα του στέγαζε μέχρι πρότινος το Δημαρχείο Θεσσαλονίκης. Όταν έφυγε το 2011, άρχισαν συζητήσεις προκειμένου να κατεδαφιστεί, κάτι που δεν έγινε λόγω των ευρημάτων. Χρόνια τώρα, έχουν ανοίξει κουβέντες για την πώλησή του με
επιχειρηματίες κυρίως από την Τουρκία, τη Ρωσία, αλλά και Άραβες να το έχουν βάλει στο… μάτι!
CARAVAN SARAI The imposing building complex on the corner of Venizelou and Vamvaka Street,
right behind the Hamza Bey Mosque (Alkazar), was constructed on the ruins of an older building of the
15th century, which – as also its name reveals- was (also) operating as an inn. From the Ottoman period
up to the Civil War, it had a leading role in the historic developments. It became a book and a movie, in
1986, directed by Tassos Psarras, while a part of it housed until recently the City Hall of Thessaloniki.
When it moved to another location, discussions began for the Caravan Sarai to be demolished, which
was prevented due to the findings. For years now, there have been discussions to give it out for sale, with
businessmen mainly from Turkey, Russia or Arabs having placed their eyes on it!

ΧΑΜΖΆ ΜΠΈΗ ΤΖΑΜΊ
Eυρύτερα γνωστό ως Αλκαζάρ (από τον
κινηματογράφο που στέγαζε), πρόκειται
για τζαμί που κτίστηκε το 1468. Είναι το
πρώτο στη Θεσσαλονίκη και παραμένει
μέχρι σήμερα το μεγαλύτερο της ελληνικής
επικράτειας, αλλά και το μοναδικό στο
χώρο της Βαλκανικής που διαθέτει αίθριο
(με εξαίρεση της Αδριανούπολης και της
Κωνσταντινούπολης). Το 1926 κηρύχτηκε
διατηρητέο μνημείο, ενώ το 2006
παραχωρήθηκε στο υπουργείο Πολιτισμού με
σκοπό την αποκατάστασή του.
HAMZA BEY MOSQUE Widely known
as Alkazar (from the cinema which
was housed in it), it is a mosque built
in 1468. It was the first in Thessaloniki
and remains until today the biggest in
the Greek territory, as well as the only
one in the Balkan region which has
a patio (with the exception of that of
Edirne and Istanbul). In 1926 it was
declared us a protected monument,
while in 2006 it was handed over to
the Ministry of Culture for the purpose
or restoration.
