SYNTAGMA SQUARE
It’s the most central and “formal” square of the capital; looming above the square is the imposing neoclas-
sical building of the Hellenic Parliament -it was built between 1836 and 1847 and until 1929 it was called
Anaktora (that is “palace”). Due to its presence many wealthy Athenians built their mansions around the area
so as to be close to the king. Here we see the Monument of the Unknown Soldier (the changing of the guards,
the Evzones, impresses the tourists -and everyone else!). The square owes its name to the movement of 3rd
September 1843, which put pressure on King Otto and forced him to concede a constitution. Around the
square some impressive hotels can be found. The Stadiou Street, the Panepistimiou Street, the Ermou Street,
the Mitropoleos Street and the Philellinon Street -the most important and known- begin from the square.
THE PANATHENAIC STADIUM
Α natural hollow on the ground at Ardettos
hill transformed into a stadium in 330-329
BC by the orator Lycurgus in order to host
the sports games during the celebration of
the Great Panathenaia. In 1896, when the
Olympic Games came back to life and were to
be held in Athens, the need of an appropriate
place came up. The benefactor Georgios Aver-
of was the one that financed the reconstruc-
tion of the marbles of the ancient stadium
of the city. The Kallimarmaro or Panathenaic
Stadium managed to live up to everyone’s
expectations during the first modern Olympic
Games. It hosts events and ceremonies, and in
the 2004 some sports games were held here.
