AVISSINIA SQUARE Nestled between the downtown streets
of Ermou and Ifestou, at the heart of the Monastiraki area, lies
this tiny sett-paved plaza that has been closely associated with
the famed antique shops. Legend has it that it was named like
that because it was here that the relief aid sent by the emperor
of Avissinia (Ethiopia) was given out to the Greek refugees from
Asia Minor because Ethiopians used to live in the area long
ago. Apart from the antique shops, which feature rare items
and collectables there is a grand bazaar taking place on Sunday
mornings where one can find whatever pops into one’s mind.

EVRIPIDOU STR. The East resides in a small alley, also known
as the Road of Spices! It is a meeting point of the aficionados of
oriental scents and flavours, since a stroll here is bound to evoke
memories and sensations. Ever since Varvakios Market opened
its doors (1886), the area including the streets of Ermou-Stadiou-
Athinas and the wider region of Athens’ historical centre have been
closely associated with the food market. The majority of the aban-
doned buildings date back to the 19th century and they were once
typical examples of the Athenian classicism. The state proclaimed
Evripidou Str. a “place of traditional trade” in 2012.
